What is Dysplasia?

Dysplasia is a condition in dogs, including German Shepherds, that occurs during their growth stage. Dysplasia is the result of loosening in the hip joint, which leads eventually to dysfunction and pain. As the German Shepherd with dysplasia grows, the condition causes cartilage and bone in the hip to begin to wear down. The condition progresses with age, leading to arthritis, muscle atrophy and reduced mobility.

Causes of Hip Dysplasia?

Some dog lineages are genetically prone to hip dysplasia including some lineages of German Shepherds. Running larger dogs on hard surfaces during the first two years of their lives may cause even healthy dogs to develop moderate to severe hip dysplasia later in life.
